During the second group stage games of the World Cup in Qatar, those FSV representing their national teams in the tournament didn’t enjoy much success. Jae-sung Lee’s South Korea were beaten 3-2 by Ghana, before the Switzerland side consisting of Silvan Widmer and Edimilson Fernandes came up just short against the Brazil side in a 1-0 defeat.

Fernandes celebrates his World Cup debut

A late Casemiro goal (83’) decided the game between Switzerland and Brazil in favour of the Selecao and gave the South Americans control of the group, whilst the “Nati” require at least a point in their final group game against Serbia on Friday (20:00 CET) in order to progress to the Round of 16.

Zerofiver’s captain Widmer started at right-back like he did for their first game of the tournament and was substituted late in the game for former Mainz player Fabian Frei (86’). Fernandes came on just before the hour mark (58’) and, in doing so, celebrated his World Cup debut against the infamous and high-class Brazilian side.

Lee watches the bitter defeat for South Korea from the bench

Lee was an unused substitute during South Korea’s unlucky defeat at the hands of Ghana, watching the back-and-forth game in which his country overturned a 2-0 deficit at the break with Gue-Sung Cho’s quick fire double (58’, 61’). However, despite having the better of the chances after their equaliser, as they had also done in the first half as well, went behind again following Mohammed Kudus’ second goal (69’) for Ghana.

Ahead of the final group stage game, Paulo Bento’s side, lying bottom with only a single point, must beat Portugal and simultaneously hope for some help from Uruguay in their game against Ghana to have any chance of qualifying for the next round.
