Mainz suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of FC Union on matchday 19 after a tight contest in the capital. Marcus Ingvartsen got his side back on level terms with just under ten minutes remaining, but the hosts struck late to take all three points. Martin Schmidt, Danny da Costa and Anthony Caci expressed their thoughts after the game.

Reaction from Berlin:

Martin Schmidt: “Our performance was okay in a game that had few chances. A 1-1 draw would’ve been a fair result but Union showed that with their efficiency, they don’t need many chances. They are full of conviction and that’s why they’re up there in the table. That hunger to get something out of the game was somewhat lacking, even though after the break and after the triple-change, we had the chance to do just that.”

Danny da Costa: “It was exactly the type of game that we expected. We wanted to defend the crosses better and with a bit more consistency at both ends of the pitch, we could have got something out of the match. We have shown over the past couple of weeks that when we’re active and when we have trust in ourselves, we can do good things. What we can take away from this game is that being determined and having a winning mentality from the first second to the last is crucial. If we can do that then we’ll pick up more points.”

1,300 fans made the trip to Berlin to cheer on FSV.

Anthony Caci: “We knew that it would be a difficult game but we wanted to pick up points. We came back well in the second half but we conceded a late goal. It is difficult against Union because they defend well as a unit and they create chances out of very little. They are a tough opponent. They can pose you problems out of nowhere and although we were well prepared, we didn’t defend the crosses very well. We need to keep working hard and keeping looking ahead.”
