Edimilson Fernandes has extended his contract with 1. FSV Mainz 05 until 2026. The defensive all-rounder, who joined the club in 2019 and was loaned to Arminia Bielefeld and Young Boys in the 2021/22 season, has returned to the Zerofivers’ starting XI, his strong performances earning him a call-up for the Swiss national team’s World Cup squad. So far, Fernandes has made 53 appearances for FSV, scoring once and recording two assists.

Mainz’s sporting director, Martin Schmidt, said: “Edimilson Fernandes is a wonderful example of a player coming back stronger from a period when things were not going too well; he had to take a lot of disappointment. He’s performed brilliantly in the Bundesliga over the last few months and has worked his way back into the Swiss national team. We’re delighted that he’ll be able to share his footballing quality, his happiness, and his spirit with us for another four years.”

“I’m very happy to be extending my contract at Mainz. Especially given how the last few years have gone, I’m over the moon to see the coach place his trust in me once more. It’s also thanks to Bo Svensson that I’ve been named as part of the Switzerland squad for Qatar. At the end of the day, I want to be on the pitch and playing my football, so this contract extension ahead of the World Cup was the logical and best decision for me,” Edi said.
