The members of TSG Hoffenheim e.V. were informed last week in writing, by post or via email, about the ordinary general meeting and the upcoming election of the new First Chairperson (the announcement of 16 August can be found here at tsg-hoffenheim.de). Following this, Jörg Albrecht was officially put forward to the club as a candidate by a member. As of 19 August 2024, he is the only candidate running for the role of First Chairperson.

“The town of Sinsheim has a lot to thank TSG Hoffenheim for. I would like to give something back,” said Albrecht, explaining his decision to accept the nomination to run for election. The 55-year-old added: “The conversations I’ve had in the last few days were characterised by a high degree of appreciation. I’m very pleased to have received support from multiple sides.”

Worker, sportsman, and passionate TSG fan

Albrecht has followed TSG very closely in the past few years in his role as Mayor of Sinsheim. As a fan, he has been a regular at the PreZero Arena for many years, and also accompanies TSG to away games when he has the time. On one occasion, this even led to him becoming briefly famous outside of the region, when the Sports Show captured him at a TSG away game at FC Bayern in 2016: he was the only spectator in one of the Munich home stands celebrating wildly when Thomas Müller missed a chance.

As a TSG fan, but also in his role as Mayor, he has been a regular attendee and guest speaker at the club’s general meetings in the past few years. He places value on spending time around people, and describes himself as a “local patriot” or a “child of the region”. A former footballer himself (he reached the regional league), Albrecht had to give up his own career far too early as a result of injury, and is now an enthusiastic cyclist. He and his wife Christiane have two daughters, Annika (24) und Ronja (20), who have left their family home in Mauer to study.

Albrecht is also a hard worker. Someone who knows what it means to build something from the ground up. Born in Sandhausen, he went to comprehensive school, then gained a higher education certificate from a vocational college in Heidelberg, and completed a degree in law and public management in Kehl. He worked his way up from being a clerk at the district office of the Rhine-Neckar district to the position of chamberlain in Rauenberg, then to the role of (independent) Mayor of Mauer (from 2001), before finally becoming Mayor of Sinsheim.

In 2012, 77 percent of the votes in Sinsheim went to Albrecht, who at the time was 44 years old. He took on the challenge offered to him by the town with its 37,000 inhabitants, and from day one in office cultivated a relationship of trust with the representatives of TSG. During his time in office, the fan house was built and the solar carport was opened, both at the PreZero Arena and both in 2014. These were not the only solution-oriented TSG projects that the town Sinsheim supported during Albrecht’s time in office.

A neutral outsider’s perspective, good knowledge of the club’s structures

In 2020, Albrecht was re-elected in Sinsheim. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he made it his mission to help the citizens of “his town” through this phase of drastic global change as best as possible. As the pandemic was reaching its end, he grew more convinced that he wanted to pass on his role as leader of Sinsheim and seek out a new challenge.

In his professional life, he has already found this new challenge: Albrecht was appointed First Chairperson of the organisation “Anpfiff ins Leben”. He will take on the role on 1 September. His time in office as Mayor of Sinsheim officially ends on 31 August. His election as First Chairperson of TSG e.V., meaning he will become the representative of all members of the club – and here it should be emphasised once again that this is a voluntary role – could take place shortly afterwards.

Albrecht emphasised: “Because of my professional background, I can offer a neutral outsider’s perspective, but I also know the club’s structures very well and understand the issues that affect the club. Now my main motivation lies in taking on some responsibility for TSG.”
