On 27 January 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp was liberated. German football has held a day of remembrance in honour of that event for 20 years around 27 January, commemorating the victims persecuted, deported and murdered by the National Socialists. “Never again!” – that is the appeal of the survivors of the concentration camps to subsequent generations. That appeal is all the more important in the present day, as incidents of anti-Semitism are on the rise again. As a football and sporting community, we are committed to resolutely tackling any form of anti-Semitism. Never again – two words that are as topical as ever before.
