Anton Stach: “It was a tough game and we can be happy that we came away with a point. We made far too many mistakes, invited them to counter-attack and didn’t defend well. All in all, it’s a fortuitous point for us. Mainz were quicker in some situations, were a tad more alert. We have to make it harder for our opponents to create goalscoring opportunities and focus on being better defensively so that we can keep clean sheets again – also for Oli, who kept us in the game once again.”
Oliver Baumann: “It’s a little fortunate, we can and have to be satisfied with the point in the end. We were dominant in the first half, but not dangerous. We scored immediately after the interval but then got hit with far too many counter-attacks and were lucky in the end. Mainz were more aggressive, more eager, and we had a lot to contend with. We need more control and stability; we have to improve defensively as quickly as possible. But I don’t want to be too negative, we’re in a good position overall. But our fans deserve to see us win a home game again. That has to be our aim.”
Robert Skov: “We want to find out for ourselves why we’re not getting such good results at home. We have to improve upon that. We haven’t picked up enough points in front of our fans this season. The performance has to be better, then we’ll get more points. It wasn’t good enough today. In the end, it’s a point that we have our goalkeeper to thank for. Oli is in very good form and we’re very grateful for that. You can’t praise him enough. For my goal, I had a lot of space after Pavel’s lovely cross. I’m very happy I was able to score.”
Pellegrino Matarazzo: “We started with decent control, but created too few chances for ourselves. The goal for 1-0 was very bitter, then we were at sea. The opening quarter of an hour after the break was good and we were also on the front foot after the equaliser. But then we surrendered the game, lost the ball unnecessarily and failed to defend the counter-attacks. Mainz were closer to the victory.”
Jan Siewert (1. FSV Mainz 05 coach): “It was an intense game. I’m both proud and disappointed. We were much closer to the win, but the ball didn’t cross the line. We had to take the penetration out of TSG’s play. That’s why Hoffenheim had more possession at the outset. We did that well and put together a few attacking moves. We did not have a clear structure for the equaliser, but the way we then reacted makes me proud.”
