Maximilian Philipp joined the Freiburg academy in the winter of 2013 from Energie Cottbus and initially played for the club’s U19s and U23s. He made his first-team debut in April 2014 and played 88 competitive games for the club over the following three years, scoring 18 goals and assisting 23. He was part of the SC side in 2016 that won the 2. Bundesliga.
Philipp moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2017/18 and featured 51 times for BVB in the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal, the Europa League and the Champions League. Following his time with Dortmund, the attacker had spells with Russian side Dynamo Moscow and then VfL Wolfsburg. The 29-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at SV Werder Bremen and actually scored against Freiburg.
“We could immediately sense the mutual appreciation we each have for one another when we sat down with Milli. He’s a great person and a really ambitious footballer. We will definitely benefit from his creativity, his technical ability and his shooting,” said sporting director Klemens Hartenbach. “This season is going to be extremely challenging for us. The basis for our success will be quality on the pitch and our team spirit. We’re really pleased to say that the boy is back in town!”
Philipp himself commented: “I feel at home here and that’s a good basis for me helping the club and the team. SC’s development over the past few years has been really impressive and I just get goosebumps when I think about playing for Freiburg at the Europa-Park Stadion.”
The details of his contract will remain undisclosed.
