The dates and times have now been announced for the second round of the DFB-Pokal, with SC Freiburg set to take on Hamburger SV on 30th October 2024 at the Europa-Park Stadion. Kick-off is at 18:00 CEST.

The DFB-Pokal second round draw took place on Sunday evening at the Fußballmuseum in Dortmund. Sonja Greinacher, Olympic champion in 3×3 basketball in Paris, performed the draw alongside DFB vice president Peter Frymuth.

Sc Freiburg were the seventh ball to be drawn by Greinacher, which granted head coach Julian Schuster’s team a home tie against second-tier Hamburger SV. The northerners marched through the first round after defeating fourth-division side SV Meppen 7-1. SC reached the second round with a 4-0 win at third-tier VfL Osnabrück.

Fond memories of a successful 2021/22 DFB-Pokal campaign

Without a doubt, the last match-up between the sides in the DFB-Pokal was one to be remembered. On 19th April 2022, SC came out 3-1 victors at a sold-out Volksparkstadion with goals from Nils Petersen, Nicolas Höfler and Vincenzo Grifo to reach a first final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin in the club’s history. After VfL Osnabrück, Hamburger SV now represent another opponent from that successful cup run in the 2021/22 season.

SC had already encountered the northerners twice before in the DFB-Pokal, but were eliminated on both occasions. HSV won 3-1 at home in the second round of the 2007/08 season and 4-1 at the Dreisamstadion also in the second round over two decades earlier, in the 1983/84 campaign.
