Werder Bremen 1-2 Bayern Munich: Initial reactions and observations

FC Bayern München v TSG Hoffenheim - Bundesliga

Initial reactions and observations

  • Once again, Bayern Munich left it late to start scoring goals. Maybe this is how Tuchel can prevent teams from making comeback wins against him.
  • Doesn’t it feel like long-range scorchers have become commonplace versus Bayern? Freiburg, Man City, and now Bremen — it happens every other game.
  • It was disappointing to see Ryan Gravenberch subbed. He was doing well in his first start in midfield and Bayern lost a lot of control without him.

Full time: Werder Bremen 1-2 Bayern Munich.

86’ — Goal. Bremen make it 2-1. What a screamer.

72’ — GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Leroy Sane makes it 2-0!

62’ — GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Serge Gnabry makes it 1-0!

45’ — The second half kicks off.

Halftime observations and analysis

  • Thomas Tuchel has Bayern Munich relying on crosses to score, but can’t coach the wingers to cross properly and refuses to play tall players in the center. Make it make sense.
  • The explanation for benching Thomas Muller (via @iMiaSanMia) makes absolutely zero sense.
  • The football is dire right now. Only one clear cut chance for Bayern vs two for Bremen. Changes needed.
  • Ryah Gravenberch looks good in this outing.
  • Only Joshua Kimmich seems up to par, except his corners.

Halftime: Werder Bremen 0-0 Bayern Munic.

35’ — We’re 35 minutes in and Bayern Munich are no closer to scoring, aside from a single chance by Benjamin Pavardowski.

Kickoff: We’re underway in Bremen!

One hour until kickoff: We have lineups! It looks like a 4-2-2-2 from Bayern Munich with Serge Gnabry and Sadio Mane starting up top. No Thomas Muller however. Ryan Gravenberch gets his chance to start for the first time this season. Let’s see if he makes the most of it.

All of Germany, especially Borussia Dortmund and its fans, is hoping that Bayern Munich will slip up in this final stretch and surrender the title for the first time in a decade. For the Bavarians, the job is to prevent that from ever happening. In most seasons, the title race would’ve been mathematically decided or close enough to decided by May, but this is a special year. Bayern are down and the vultures are circling.

It’s up to Thomas Tuchel to deny them a feast. He currently has seven players out injured or suspended, six of whom are starters, and all of whom would start for any other club in the league and most of them in Europe. That kind of setback is hard for any coach to deal with, but being coach of Bayern Munich isn’t a normal job — it comes with elevated expectations. With stars like Thomas Muller, Joshua Kimmich, Matthijs de Ligt, Kingsley Coman, and more still on his team, he has more than enough match winners to get three points vs Werder Bremen.

It’s Bayern time.
