U19s and U17s out for home wins

Borussia’s youth Bundesliga teams both end the first English week of the 2023/24 season with matches at home: the U17s welcome reigning German U17 champions Arminia Bielefeld to the BVB youth performance centre on Saturday (11:00 CET), while the U19s face Viktoria Köln at the same venue and kick-off time on Sunday.

Mike Tullberg had nothing but words of praise for his U19 team after their 4-0 win away to Wuppertaler SV. The head coach highlighted the “high intensity”, and thought the team had “played very maturely” and was pleased with their focused approach. “I expect the same seriousness and determination against Viktoria Köln,” explained Tullberg.

So far, the young side led by captain Filippo Mane have been delivering results. They won the first three games of the season, and are the clear league leaders with nine points, ahead of both 1. FC Köln and MSV Duisburg with seven. The Black & Yellows have also scored 13 goals and conceded just one. They will be out to defend their lead ahead of the four-week break in the championship. BVB also have the league’s current top scorer in Paris Brunner (five goals). The attacker, who recently scored a hat-trick in Wuppertal, received special praise from his coach for his hard running game. “Paris was really strong against the ball and worked hard for the team. This performance should be a benchmark for him,” said Tullberg.

The U19s beat Viktoria Köln 3-0 in a friendly match at the beginning of preseason preparations. “The conditions are completely different this time,” stresses Tullberg, who is bringing centre-back Tyler Meiser back into his squad. The Cologne club won 4-3 against Wuppertal a week ago and then drew 1-1 with Arminia Bielefeld in midweek. Mike Tullberg is setting a clear goal: “We want to finish the English week with a win.”

Nick Cherny back in the starting line-up

Marco Lehmann is sending the U17s into their match against Arminia Bielefeld with the same objective. After the victories against RW Essen (3-1) and RW Oberhausen (2-1), the Black & Yellows have established themselves in the large chasing pack behind league leaders Schalke 04 (nine points). BVB are getting set to play a third match in seven days. “That shouldn’t be a problem, although the intense second half against Oberhausen did take a bit of a toll. But there is nothing better for the boys than playing football,” says the coach.

Arminia’s XI has changed almost completely compared to preseason. The East Westphalians have scored in only one game, a 2-2 draw at home to RW Essen, and occupy second-last place in the table. “A tactically difficult opponent to assess,” explains Lehmann, who still has to make do without several regular players. New to the starting XI in any case is former Bielefeld player Nick Cherny, who has played his way into the spotlight over the first few weeks of the season. “It is our clear goal and ambition to improve on the victories against Essen and Oberhausen,” says Marco Lehmann.

Cherny, like Tyler Meiser, is part of the Germany U17 national team squad that will play a four-nation tournament against Israel, Denmark and Italy in Hennef and Bonn from 4 to 13 September. But on Saturday, he first wants to celebrate a win against his former club. (wiwi)
