Strong performance by the women’s handballers against Aarhus

Third friendly, third win. Despite only just beginning their preparations for the Bundesliga season, which starts on 9 September, the Borussia Dortmund women’s handballers were in astonishing early form. The Borussia ladies ran out 24-23 (10-9) winners against Aarhus United in the second friendly fixture during their training camp in Skærbæk, Jutland.

The 32-24 victory against Danish top-tier outfit Ringkøbing Håndbold on Monday evening was followed by another friendly against SK Aarhus Handbold on Tuesday evening. An upper mid-table team in the Premier League, the Danes were an opponent to be taken seriously. “You could also sense that the Danish league already gets started in two weeks. The players are further along in pre-season,” analysed Borussia’s sporting director Andreas Kuno, who had travelled at the beginning of the week and informed himself about the state of the preparations on site.

Following their improved display against Ringkøbing Håndbold on Monday evening compared to the first friendly against Bundesliga promoted outfit Solingen-Gräfrath a week earlier, the Borussia ladies were in even stronger form against Aarhus. Kuno was particularly impressed by the defensive work with a strong goalie between the sticks in Tess Lieder, who saved over 50% of the chances she faced. “We dominated for 52 minutes, always found solutions in attack against a good Aarhus defence, played outstandingly and led 22-15 at one point,” Kuno said in summary of the situation. Among the standout performers was Alicia Stolle, who scored numerous goals from the back of the court and played a very clever game, in Kuno’s eyes. As did Frida Rönning and Dana Bleckmann, who spearheaded BVB’s play. Zoë Sprengers and Lena Hausherr shone on the flanks.

Only in the final eight minutes were Borussia too hasty and unsuccessful with their attacking efforts, which allowed Aarhus to close the gap from seven goals to one. “Fundamentally, I’m really satisfied. But in both games that we’ve now played in Denmark, we had too many misplaced finishes. We still need to improve our conversion rate,” reflected BVB coach Henk Groener.

The Borussia contingent was paid a visit by goalkeeper Yara ten Holte, who had travelled from Odense and was delighted to be reunited with her former team-mates.

The third and final friendly fixture of the training camp, which ends on Saturday, will take place away to Horsens HK on Thursday.
