It actually would have been four if Dzenis Burnic, 25, had not left the promoted outfit during the summer break and completed a transfer to Karlsruher SC. Burnic made 20 appearances for 1. FC Heidenheim’s promotion-winning team last term.

Three other former Dortmund players were involved in (almost) every match. Lennard Maloney, 23, missed only the away game in Paderborn (3-2 defeat) on Matchday 32 due to suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards – it was one of only two defeats for the team in the final 15 rounds of matches! Maloney made 61 appearances for the Borussia Dortmund U23s between 2020 and 2022.

Patrick Mainka

Patrick Mainka, 28, and Jan-Niklas Beste, 24, were involved in all 34 second-tier matches for the club from the 50,000-inhabitant city in eastern Baden-Württemberg last season. Mainka played for the Black & Yellow U23s from 2016 to 2018 (86 appearances, nine goals) and went on to make 163 out of a possible 170 second-division appearances for 1. FC Heidenheim (13 goals, six assists), while Beste wore the BVB shirt from U14 to U19 level and became a German champion at A and B-Youth level once each. In the summer of 2022, he made a switch from up north (Werder Bremen) to down south. His record: a remarkable 25 goal involvements in 34 second-tier appearances for 1. FCH (12 goals, 13 assists), promotion to the Bundesliga – and now a reunion with Borussia Dortmund in front of over 81,000 spectators at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK on Matchday 3.
