Next friendly victory: Women’s handball team beat Blomberg-Lippe

The Borussia Dortmund women’s handballers have continued their run of victories in preparation for the new season. The team followed up the wins against HSV Solingen-Gräfrath and three Danish top-flight representatives during the training camp by beating HSG Blomberg-Lippe 32-27 (15-16) away from home on Wednesday evening, and demonstrated plenty of combative spirit in the process.

Henk Groener’s team found it difficult to get going at the outset. The home team dominated the match and pulled away to take a 16-9 lead, but Dortmund responded by showing great fighting spirit as they scored six goals and kept a clean sheet for the remainder of the first half. They went in at the interval narrowly behind with the score at 16-15.

“We were not sufficiently focused at the beginning. We were not energetic enough in attack and lacked aggressiveness in defence. It felt as though 80% of the first 12 goals we conceded were because we made mistakes and Blomberg were able to counter-attack with tempo,” said Henk Groener. “We were caught napping in the first 10 minutes. But it’s absolutely respectable to concede only 20 goals in the remaining 52 minutes. For long stretches, we also performed very well with our positional attacks,” explained the coach. “There is naturally still a bit of coordination lacking, that’s logical. Today it was very good in spells, but it was our work and fight that brought us back into the game. The handballing elements then came back after that.”

BVB took the lead for the first time shortly after the start of the second half and subsequently saw the game out comfortably to ensure they returned to Dortmund with a 32-27 victory. After the opening stages, “we flipped the switch and fought our way back strongly. We can therefore be satisfied overall because we showed morale and fighting spirit,” explained Lena Hausherr.

HSG Blomberg-Lippe will be the opponents again next week when the two sides contest a friendly in Dortmund. The match will be played at 18:30 CET on 23 August as part of the season opening event. Admission is free. (Further information.)
