Kehl: “The three points help us”

After the 1-0 home victory against 1. FC Köln, sporting director Sebastian Kehl spoke about the match, Donyell Malen’s goal, Gregor Kobel’s interventions and the team’s situation.

Sebastian Kehl’s take on the match:
“We didn’t play quickly enough, found too few solutions and repeatedly allowed counter-attacking opportunities. We positioned ourselves poorly and were not in the spaces we had discussed. Köln could have scored one or two goals. So it is a fortuitous victory that we will of course happily take.”

…on Greg Kobel’s saves:
“Ultimately, it’s a team sport. Gregor is a top goalkeeper who repeatedly kept us in games last season – and did so today too. That’s also what he’s there for.”

…on the situation where Donyell Malen was supposed to be substituted but stayed on the pitch:
“When we almost brought Donny off, Julian (editor’s note: Ryerson) indicated he was having problems. So we had to change our minds. That was slightly unfortunate for Jamie (editor’s note: Bynoe-Gittens), but on the other hand it was the right substitution as Donny stayed on the pitch.”

…on Donyell Malen’s goal:
“It’s good for him, it confirms the run that he’s been on over recent months. The goal was slightly fortunate. The way it happened, you can’t coach that.”

…on the coming weeks:
“Beforehand I said: you don’t look at the table in the first five matches; rather, you try to find a rhythm. The three points help us. Everyone could see that we’re not yet at 100%. We need to work hard in the coming weeks in order to find our rhythm and work on procedures and stability.” (br)
