“Hard work, diligence and a lot of self-criticism”

Edin Terzic was very critical of his team’s performance and in particular their tackling at the press conference, saying: “We want to learn from this as quickly as possible in order to take advantage of the next opportunity at home to Heidenheim on Friday evening.”

Edin Terzic on the game in Bochum:
“We’re not satisfied with the performance or with the result. We played against a very passionate team and were missing many things, particularly in the first half. It was a tad better in the opening phase of the second half, but it was very open again towards the end with two teams that were fighting for the win. The performance was not sufficient to come away as the winner.”

…on the tactical approach:
“There are four points to bear in mind against a team that defends so courageously and so openly: activity in order to make the spaces big and to not give the opponent the opportunity to get into two-on-one situations; positional changes and counter-movements in order to achieve depth; one-two actions on the flanks, which happened far too rarely; and fundamentally we want to give a better account of ourselves offensively. Today it was only good for a short spell in which we were able to take control to some degree. But we did not manage to finish off a few opportunities with purpose. VfL did not hesitate. They used every action that they had in order to cross the ball in front of the goal or take a shot themselves.”

…on the challenges:
“We knew there would be a lot of challenges. If you don’t show the willingness to throw everything into these 50-50 challenges, in order to turn a 50-50 into a 60-40 or a 70-30, then it’s going to be open. That’s how it was in the first period, and that’s how it became open again in the last 15 minutes. We’re not content with that. We want to learn from this as quickly as possible in order to take advantage of the next opportunity at home to Heidenheim on Friday evening.”

…on the new central midfield:
“We would of course like for everything to work immediately and for everyone to know immediately how the others tick. That takes time. But no one is going to gift us that; we need to get there through hard work, lots of diligence and a lot of self-criticism! The lads step on the gas in training. But the week is only good when the game is good too. We didn’t show that today.”

…on the substitution of Mats Hummels:
“He indicated in the half-time break that his back had seized up. He underwent treatment and then put his thumb down.”

…on the performance levels after seven weeks of preparation:
“It was not as fluid as we had envisaged in the first two matches. I’m confident that it won’t take long until we rediscover the effortlessness and activity that we require so that everyone reaches their maximum. Seven weeks of preparation: that’s correct for the players who were not with their national team – there were exactly five of them. For some players there were three weeks of preparation; for others only seven days.”
