The Borussia Dortmund women’s handball team suffered their first defeat of preseason in their fifth friendly game, losing 27-24 (16-13) to HSG Blomberg-Lippe. On Saturday, the team will travel to face big-name French team Metz Handball. The new club of former Black & Yellow Alina Grijseels are likely to be the toughest opposition BVB face throughout preseason.
“Of course you can lose against Blomberg. They are a solid and well-drilled team that can play a fast-paced game. Both of the games against Blomberg were important, especially with a view to the league. We will face them again on the third matchday,” said Borussia coach Henk Groener.
A week ago in Blomberg, BVB had been able to decide the match in their favour (32-27) thanks to an improved performance in the second half. On Wednesday evening, the Black & Yellows were 16-13 down at the break in Wellinghofen, as the visitors dominated the first half.
Things were not running smoothly for BVB, especially in attack. Despite an impressive Tess Lieder in goal, who stood out with her excellent build-up passing, BVB were trailing 8-3 after ten minutes. In attack, too many opportunities were squandered due to sloppy passing. Blomberg took advantage of this time and time again with effective counter-attacks. Henk Groener had to intervene and called a time-out after just 14 minutes.
His team then started to play better. Frida Rønning in particular provided impetus and netted three times before the break. Lisa Antl scored twice from the circle. After 20 minutes, however, BVB was still down 12-8. Ten minutes later, they went into the dressing room with the score at 16-13.
Things improved in the second half. Spaniard Carmen Costa brought BVB to within two goals at 16-14 while her second goal brought the score back to 19-17 (38). Borussia kept up the pressure, showing determination and fighting spirit. “It was important that we kept fighting,” said Groener.
Ten minutes before the final whistle, Dortmund were within reach at 25-22 thanks to a second goal by Swede Emma Olsson, and four minutes before the end, Zoe Sprengers reduced the deficit to 26-24. In the end, the final score was 27-24 to Blomberg, as BVB fell to their first defeat of preseason.
The 300 spectators in the Wellinghofen hall nonetheless left satisfied, having experienced a successful season-opening event and an entertaining team performance. Head of department Rupert Thiele was clearly pleased too. The event was a triumph and the fans were able to get in the mood for the start of the league on 9 September.
“It can be good to lose a game like that. Provided we learn our lessons from it. In attack, we simply overplayed things, didn’t offer enough of a scoring threat and too many passes were misplaced. That got better after the break. But we have to be more consistent in defence. And we still need a little time to play our way into form,” was the conclusion drawn by head coach Henk Groener.
BVB: Lieder, Wachter; Hausherr (1), Sprengers (3/1), Kusian (1), Antl (2), Degenhardt (1), Stolle (3), Ossenkopp (4), Olsson (2), Rønning (3), Bleckmann (1), Costa (3)
