Haller: “A good start”

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and two of the goalscorers, Sébastien Haller and Marcel Sabitzer, spoke to the media after the cup tie at Schott Mainz. The match reactions.

Marcel Sabitzer (to ruhrnachrichten.de): “Mainz had a lot of counter-attacking situations in the first minutes. It’s a case of clear balls that we lost. Things can then get dangerous at league level, we’ll need to avoid that. But it’s normal that not everything is right in the first competitive game. We won 6-1 and fulfilled the task. It feels as though I’ve already been here longer. I feel very comfortable, the lads are top. My position depends on what the coach says. Today he wanted to play with a double pivot, so I was slightly deeper. I feel very comfortable in the role of the connecting player. A goal and an assist on my debut are of course nice.”

Gregor Kobel (in the mixed zone): “If I’m fit, then I want to play. We’re satisfied with the result. Even if not everything worked in all areas. But that’s normal for the first game of a season. It can’t yet all be 100% right. What counts in the end is that we fulfilled the task and went through. We won 6-1, so I don’t see any problems. Nonetheless, we can manage a match in an even more controlled way and put our stamp on the game even more. It really gets going next week. We’re delighted!”

Sébastien Haller (to Sky): “It took 20 minutes to get control of the ball, then things went smoothly. I still have room for improvement. The disappointment of last season is still in our minds. We shall use the trauma as motivation to do better. Today was a good start. It was a good game.”
