On Saturday evening, the Germany senior male team came from behind to beat the USA 3-1 in a friendly match under new coach Julian Nagelsmann. BVB striker Niclas Füllkrug scored to put Germany 2-1 ahead in the 58th minute after a strong piece of combination play.
Germany, with Niclas Füllkrug and Mats Hummels in the starting line-up, initially struggled against the US national team and fell behind to a goal from former Black & Yellow Christian Pulisic (27). Ilkay Gündogan provided the direct answer 12 minutes later, slotting home to make it 1-1 at half-time.
The visiting Germans then picked up more and more momentum in the second half. The offensive action for the 2-1 lead was initiated on the right side: after a neat combination of passes , the ball reached Robin Gosens, who picked out Füllkrug in the box. Borussia’s number 14 kept his nerve and fired a confident effort with his right foot into the right corner from about seven metres out (58). This was his eighth goal in his tenth game for his country. Not long afterwards, in the 61st minute, Germany grabbed another goal to bring the score to 3-1. After an individual action, the ball rebounded to Füllkrug, who got his head up and set up Jamal Musiala with a tidy pass in the penalty area.
All four of the BVB pros made an appearance during the match. Niklas Süle came on to replace Mats Hummels in the 62nd minute, while Julian Brandt replaced Leroy Sané in the 71st. Gio Reyna was in the starting line-up for the USA, but was substituted at half-time.
Haller scores for Ivory Coast
Also successful for his national team was Sébastien Haller. The 29-year-old scored the opening goal in a friendly match against Morocco, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
