First home game of the season: U23s to host SC Freiburg

The Borussia Dortmund U23s’ first home game of the new season is coming up on Sunday (13:30 CET). The SC Freiburg U23s will be the opponents at Stadion Rote Erde. Ted Tattermusch will again line up in a rather unfamiliar position.

It is set to be the crowning finale of a Black & Yellow home game weekend: the day after the first team’s clash with 1. FC Köln in the Bundesliga, the U23s will return to competitive action in the 3. Liga following a fixture-free weekend.

Dortmund coach Jan Zimmermann used the time to finally work with his entire squad. “I’m happy we have everyone on board and have been able to train with a larger group. In any case, we’re now further along than before. We’ll see how far on Sunday.” Nonetheless, the coach continues to ask for patience. “We still need a certain period of time in order to get where we want to be.”

That applies, among others, to Ted Tattermusch, who played as a right-back in Münster – not an entirely new experience for the striker by trade. Back in the 2021/22 season, former BVB coach Enrico Maaßen tested him on the right of defence. It was unusual, as Tattermusch admits with a smile. “It’s a change,” revealed the former forward. But it helps that he played at centre-back up until U17 level. At 1.94 metres, he is also well suited to central defence. From now on, Tattermusch will be charged with keeping the opponent away from his own goal on the right of defence. But at the same time, the ex-frontman wants to continue to live out his attacking instincts – when the situation permits it, at least. “I shall try to make my mark in our attacking play and to set up goals.”

The coach revealed that Tattermusch’s move from attack back to defence has a longer back story: “We already had this idea last season and have now used the entirety of pre-season to this end. Ted has all the skills for this position and also the willingness. He is fast, robust and strong in the air, which is what you want from a defender. The physical requirements were part of the reason why we thought about it. On the topic of his debut in Münster, Zimmermann said: “He was slightly nervous in his first game, but that’s normal. He did very well. It’s a process that is not yet finished and I am confident that he will grow into this position.”

Now, the aim is to build on the point from the opening game in Münster (0-0) with three more against Freiburg’s U23’s. The Black & Yellows will be aiming for a first home win in three attempts against the talented Breisgau side. The two previous meetings ended 1-1 and 2-0.
