After the cup is before the Bundesliga: Borussia Dortmund will face 1. FC Köln in their first home game of the 2023/24 season. The top match kicks off at 18:30 CET on Saturday.

The Black & Yellows have successfully come through the first competitive match of the season: BVB won 6-1 away to TSV Schott Mainz last weekend and reached the second round of the DFB-Pokal. Coach Edin Terzic was not satisfied with the first 20 minutes. “But when it no longer went through the middle so often, when we discovered the flanks, almost every goal was created by a move down the wings. That makes us confident that the things that we had set out to do actually work. If we go about things more clearly and cleanly, it will get easier for us,” said the coach. “But on Saturday it’s down to business in another competition. We want to take the next step there.”

1. FC Köln will be the visitors to SIGNAL IDUNA PARK in the first round of the new Bundesliga season. The game comes too soon for Julien Duranville, Thomas Meunier and Gio Reyna. Niklas Süle, who came off with back problems in Mainz, has already been able to train with the team again. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Mateu Morey are also on track and have taken part in team training. There is still a question mark over the involvement of Karim Adeyemi and Felix Nmecha. “But we’re confident that it could work,” said Terzic, who also commented on the minor injury suffered by Emre Can, who pulled out of the training session on Tuesday afternoon following the warm-up. “It was agreed that he would cut the second training session of the day short if he felt something in his calf. Emre trained individually yesterday. We’re confident that there’ll be no problems for Saturday.”

The men from Cologne finished in 11th position in the Bundesliga last season. “Steffen Baumgart has had a big impact,” said Terzic of his opposite number. “It’s not so easy for them at the beginning of the season. They have lost important players and characters such as Jonas Hector, Timo Horn and Ellyes Skhiri. But I believe them to be really unpleasant opponents that are always courageous and hungry.” Köln are the team that delivered the most crosses in the Bundesliga and not only scored goals as a result, but also won many set-pieces. Terzic labelled the team as “extremely unpleasant. We sensed that last season too. We’re looking forward to the challenge. We’re playing at home and know that we need a good performance to win the game.”
