Comfortable opening competitive game for the BVB women

In addition to the men’s first team, the BVB women also started their season on Saturday: head coach Thomas Sulewski’s team beat Landesliga outfit SC Borchen by a 7-0 scoreline at the BVB Evonik Football Academy in the first round of the Westfalenpokal.

The visitors made it difficult for the Black & Yellows at the beginning of the match. Borchen defended compactly and only allowed the Borussia ladies limited space. They relied on well-organised midfield pressing. Sulewski’s charges did not become hectic and established a better foothold in the match after Marie Grothe’s opening goal (9). Mia Bedarf scored to make it 2-0 heading into the break (17). “We initially struggled and too rarely switched the play at speed in the first period. But the opposition also defended in disciplined fashion and made our lives difficult,” commented coach Sulewski.

The visitors from Borchen played a higher line in the second half, which gave the Borussia ladies more space to get the ball up top more quickly. The Black & Yellows were more dominant and registered numerous shots. BVB added five goals in the second 45 minutes and came away from an impressive first competitive game as the deserved victors. Sulewski was also satisfied afterwards. “That was a good first game. We had four new signings in the starting XI, so we of course still have to find our feet even better in the next few weeks. I’m very satisfied with the second half. We stepped on the gas and that’s why the win and the margin of it are completely merited. Respect also to our opponents, who made our lives very difficult in many phases today via their tactical discipline.”

BVB women: Jäger, Hentrich (Geldschläger, 71), Greulich (Lau, 79), Tan (Reinhardt, 55), Kuhl (Becker, 65), Gomulka (Rogge-Herper, 82), Bedarf, Grothe, Klemann, Glänzer, Haslsteiner

Goals: 1-0 Grothe (9), 2-0 Bedarf (22), 3-0 Reinhardt (70), 4-0 Greulich (74), 5-0 Reinhardt (80), 6-0 Grothe (82), 7-0 Reinhardt (90)
