In the first of a total of three friendly matches on the training camp, BVB won 32-24 (14-12) against Danish first division team Ringkøbing Håndbold after a strong performance.

After a journey of almost 600 km on the team bus to Skærbæk in southern Denmark – coupled with the first violent effects of Storm “Hans” over Scandinavia – the Borussia Dortmund handball players arrived in Jutland. Just 24 hours after arriving on Sunday, the first friendly match against Danish first division team Ringkøbing Håndbold was on the agenda.

The improved performance compared with the first pre-season game against newly promoted Bundesliga side Solingen-Gräfrath and the strong showing of Spanish international Carmen Campos were particularly noteworthy. Zoë Sprengers was BVB’s top scorer with seven goals. New signing Alica Stolle underlined her class with five goals from the back court. “This was a much more concentrated performance, a completely different dynamic against challenging opposition, who would not be out of place in the Bundesliga,” said Andreas Kuno, describing the performance in the hall in Skærbæk.

Kuno was particularly impressed by the showing of new signing, Spanish international Carmen Campos at centre-half. “Carmen has already taken on the way our head coaches want to play after a short time and only a few training sessions. She has a very high handball IQ,” said Kuno.

The first half saw the lead change several times and an increasingly impressive goalkeeper in Sarah Wachter between the sticks for BVB. In the second half, Tess Lieder showed her qualities in goal. With a very effective, high-tempo game built on good defence, BVB pulled away goal by goal and had extended their lead to eight goals by the final whistle. Zoë Sprengers played a big part in this by bagging several goals, but Alicia Stolle, who only joined Dortmund in the summer from Champions League side FTC Budapest, also impressed. “You can see that something is coming together and growing, even though Alicia was only playing her second game for us,” said Kuno.

Head coach Henk Groener fielded not only the players from the Bundesliga squad against the Danish from Ringkøbing, but also two players from the youth team who travelled with the team. Mara Birk and Lana von der Wiede both got minutes, while Lara Egelin is expected to be used in the match against Aarhus, which will take place in Skærbæk again on Tuesday evening.
