The Borussia Dortmund women’s handball team not only used the training camp, which ended on Saturday, to prepare for the new season, but also to appoint new leaders in team, with Alicia Stolle succeeding Alina Grijseels as team captain. Frida Rønning will be vice-captain.

Having already played for BVB in her youth, Alicia Stolle returned to Dortmund in the summer after nine years away. She will play a key role not only on the court, but also off it. The left-hander will now lead Henk Groener’s team as captain. She will assisted by Norwegian Frida Rønning as vice-captain. Tess Lieder, Carmen Campos, Dana Bleckmann and Zoë Sprengers will support the duo as members of the team council.

“I am looking forward to this new role. It makes me proud and I am very grateful for the trust the club and the team have put in me. With the others at my side, we are well positioned and can benefit from the different forms of experience we bring. I hope that together, we will achieve much more and continue along the successful path Borussia Dortmund are on,” said Stolle.

Coach Henk Groener had the following to say on his new captain: “She has already played here in her youth, she knows the club and has gained a lot of experience, including in Europe. She knows me and my work, which are important reasons [behind the decision]. She will help us in this role with her experience and professionalism and will be an important point of contact within the team.”

“This was a decision made by the team and the coaching staff during the training camp. I am very positive about it, because Alicia has the quality to take on this role. Thanks to her international experience, we are certainly very well positioned,” said head of department Rupert Thiele.
