17th cup campaign for Mats Hummels

The 6-1 win at TSV Schott Mainz was Borussia Dortmund’s biggest away win in the DFB-Pokal in 26 years. There was an 8-0 triumph against SV Warnemünde in August 1997. The match facts.

Onslaught: Shot ratio of 24-5, every fourth shot from Borussia found the net.

Intent: Five of the 24 shots at goal came from Marco Reus. One of them led at least indirectly to a goal, with Marcel Sabitzer scoring to make it 4-1 on the follow-up.

Hard-working: Marcel Sabitzer never made a start for Bayern in the DFB-Pokal but he did for BVB on his debut – and he scored in the cup for the first time since February 2021 (then for Leipzig). The new signing worked very hard in midfield and covered 11.1 kilometres (the joint-highest value together with Julian Brandt).

Dominant: Mats Hummels touched the ball 127 times (the most of any player) and delivered 97% of his passes to a team-mate. The 34-year-old was in fine form in the opening game of his 17th DFB-Pokal campaign.

Brace: Sébastien Haller also ruthlessly converted his second chance of the game and notched his second brace in the DFB-Pokal. He had previously scored twice in Frankfurt’s 4-0 win over Schweinfurt in October 2017.

Attack-minded: Niklas Süle registered two of BVB’s first three shots.

Experienced: Borussia Dortmund’s starting line-up had an average age of 28.8 years; the last time the Black & Yellows had such an old line-up in a competitive game was under Thomas Doll in 2007/08: in the 2-1 DFB-Pokal final defeat to Bayern Munich after extra time on 19 April 2008.
