What an award for winger Gerrit Holtmann! The Bochum forward has only gone and won “Goal of the Year” for 2021 in Germany. On Sunday, ARD announced this during their sports show, where the next round for the DFB-Pokal took place. Congratulations, Gerrit!

The process is simple, the 12 monthly winners enter the race for the “Goal of the Year”. Gerrit Holtmann had secured the award in the month of August with his super solo against Mainz 05. Out of the 12 brilliant goals, Holtmann came out on top! In winning the award, he beat the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Erling Haaland and Patrik Schick.

Holtmann is now the direct successor to Valentino Lazaro, who took the title in 2020 while playing for Borussia Mönchengladbach. For VfL Bochum 1848, on the other hand, it’s a first! Never before have the Blue and Whites been able to provide a goal scorer of the year. Despite that, 7 VfL players have scored goals of the month in the past. In addition to Holtmann, Simon Zoller and Anthony Losilla, are among others who have been nominated.
