Schlotterbeck: “A partial success”

Reaction to the 1-1 draw in Wolfsburg

FC Augsburg were 1-0 up for over 45 minutes in Wolfsburg on Saturday, but had to settle for a point in the end. Here is the post-match reaction.

Keven Schlotterbeck: “We’re obviously a bit disappointed to not have taken all three points after fighting so hard for 90 minutes and having led for so long. Nevertheless, we can count this is as a partial success because it’s our first point away from home and we defended well for a long time. We have to build on that and then look to see the win home next time. If we keep fighting for each other like we did today, I’m confident we’ll do exactly that.”

Phillip Tietz: : “The point doesn’t feel particularly great right now, but we can still be satisfied. We were compact in defence and barely allowed them any chances. In attack though, we didn’t create enough opportunities of our own. We will now analyse the game and do all we can to get the three points next time out.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We managed to keep things tight for a large part of the game and denied Wolfsburg clear-cut chances – but unfortunately not for the whole match. We didn’t get the ball forward enough in the second half in particular and that put us under real pressure. We’ve still had a good week and have grown closer together as a team. We’re on the right track overall.”

Marius Wolf: “Looking at the game as a whole, a point is fair, even though we led for a long time and conceded the equaliser late on. They didn’t have many chances in the first half. We have to be honest and admit we didn’t do enough going forward after the break and that allowed Wolfsburg to put us under pressure. We’ll take our first away point and now want to get back to winning ways at home to Hoffenheim.”

Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): “After losing each of our last three away games and conceding plenty of goals in the process, it was important for us today to take at least a point from the game. I could sense the players were disappointed in the dressing room though. We defended well for 90 minutes, but focused too much on defending our lead in the second half in particular and forgot about playing football. Overall, it’s been a good week and this draw is at least a step in the right direction.”

Ralph Hasenhüttl (VfL Wolfsburg head coach): “We were desperate for our first league win at home this season after the victory here in the Pokal in the week. We weren’t able to achieve that, so we’re naturally disappointed. We defended well and had the game under control, but were suddenly 1-0 down. It’s then really tough against a team that sit back that much. We kept on trying to create chances despite that. The lads remained patient and invested so much to earn this point.”
