Maaßen: “No feeling of celebration, but we did what we needed to do”

Reaction to the season finale in Gladbach

In part dissatisfied with the performance, but also relieved to be playing Bundesliga football next season – players and the coach react to the 2-0 defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “It was a terrible game today. The first half was particularly bad, you’ve no chance in the Bundesliga if you play like that. We’d like to have secured our Bundesliga status ourselves, but we were unable to do so. It’s a horrible feeling to be dependent on other teams and to nervously wait for those results to come in. But at the end of the day, we survived and that’s what counts!”

Ermedin Demirovic: “There was a lot of pressure on us before the game, and we didn’t deal with it as well as we’d have liked to. I don’t want to speak about the game at all, we’ve been presented with so many opportunities to confirm our survival ourselves and we simply haven’t been able to do so. It’s over now, we can cross this season off, take away the key learning points from it and go again in August.”

Enrico Maaßen: “We’re relieved, but we imagined the last few fames going very differently. We were very poor in the first half, it was wild and we didn’t get into the duels properly. As a result, there’s no feeling of celebration and it certainly doesn’t feel good, but we did what we needed to do and now we’re going to analyse some things ruthlessly. We’ve kicked off some good things and trusted a very young team who, even if they weren’t brilliant today, have done well. We can build on that.”
