An experienced goal threat: Mounié in focus
Captain of the Benin national side
Steve Mounié comes to FC Augsburg off the back of 162 Ligue 1 games and 59 Premier League appearances. The 29-year-old forward is known for his physical presence and heading ability. We’re taking a closer look at our new signing.
Steve Michel Mounié was born on 29th September 1994 in Parakou, Benin, and moved to France with his family as a child. He joined the youth academy of top-tier side Montpellier HSC in 2009. The 1.90-metre-tall striker made his professional debut in Ligue 1 in 2015 for Montpellier, where he soon made a name for himself with his goal threat and athleticism.
Moving to England
Mounié became even more of a household name in the 2016/17 season, when he scored 14 goals and provided four assists, finishing as one of the top scorers in the French league. This form earned the forward a move to the Premier League with Huddersfield Town, for whom he made 59 appearances in the top tier. Mounié netted seven times in his first season with the Terriers, playing a vital role in them securing survival. His head coach at the time was future Schalke boss David Wagner.
Three years later, Mounié returned to France with Stade Brestois. He continued his successful career there with 23 Ligue 1 goals over three seasons. In total, he played 162 games in France’s top division, registering 44 goals and 11 assists. The Fuggerstädter’s new signing has also featured regularly at international level. He has represented Benin since 2015 and has earned over 50 caps, including now as captain. His 17 goals also make him one of the West African country’s all-time top scorers.
A danger from set pieces
Mounié is well-known for his heading and his ability to get the better of defenders in the box. He is a constant threat from set pieces with his 1.90-metre frame and incredible leap, which leads to his nickname of ‘Air Mounié’. “I’m proud that this move makes me the first Benin international to play in three of the top five European leagues,” he said after his move to Augsburg.
