Gouweleeuw: “This defeat hurts”

Reaction to the 4-0 loss in Leipzig

FC Augsburg lost 4-0 in Leipzig on matchday 5 in the Bundesliga. Here is the post-match reaction.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “This defeat hurts. Leipzig went ahead with their first chance of the game and that obviously isn’t good for your confidence. It was extremely difficult after that. The fact that I missed a penalty with the score at 2-0 was obviously disappointing and frustrating for me, but that’s football. We have to analyse this game, but one thing is for sure: it’s not down to the formation because we’ve conceded lots of goals with both a back-three and a back-four. We need to improve and put this game behind us. Next week we have to play to our best and show that we’re ready.”

Phillip Tietz: “Today was simply a bad game. It didn’t go as we’d hoped it would. We conceded four goals and made far too many basic errors – you can’t take many positives from a game like this. We failed to threaten in attack and made too many mistakes. People keep talking about a rebuild and the number of new players in our squad, but that definitely wasn’t the reason for today’s performance because players that have been here for a while also made mistakes. We all need to play to our best again together. We’ve got the chance against Gladbach next Friday to show a different side of ourselves.”

Henri Koudossou: “We all came here to get something from the game, which we didn’t manage to do today. Things are only going to be even more difficult when you’re 2-0 down after 15 minutes in Leipzig. Even though we were 4-0 behind when I came on, I’m excited about every minute I can play in the Bundesliga – that’s good for my personal development. I believe that the team can play better next week, everyone is desperate to and we have the potential to do so as well.”

Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): “We let them score two goals in the first 15 minutes and you’ll always have problems when you do that in Leipzig. We improved after their second goal but failed to take our big chance from the penalty spot. During the break, we spoke about trying to keep the game open in the second half, but instead we conceded a third goal after 30 seconds. Our opponents, with all their quality, played well and we didn’t. I need time to come to terms with today because we’re making our own lives difficult with the way we are defending without the ball. We deserved to lose and I have full respect for the way Leipzig played, but we played our part in today’s defeat.”

Marco Rose (RasenBallsport Leipzig coach): “It was a good performance by my team over the course of the 90 minutes. We were focused, sharp and played with intensity. I mostly enjoyed our cutting edge in the final third. We kept it simple, with the first goal the best example of that. After a tricky week, this win will give us belief. We’re now looking forward to the Champions League game against Juve.”
