Record against Wolfsburg

Overall: 56 games. 26 wins, 8 draws, 22 defeats. 85:82 goal difference.
In the Bundesliga: 50 games. 21 wins, 7 draws, 22 defeats. 70:76 goal difference.

The season so far

VfB made it back-to-back wins in the league with a 5-1 triumph against Borussia Dortmund last Sunday, following on from a 3-1 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side are currently seventh in the standings.

Wolfsburg, meanwhile, were close to taking points off Bayern Munich (L3-2), Eintracht Frankfurt (L2-1) and Bayer Leverkusen (L4-3) but in the end went down to narrow defeats in all three. In their other game, head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men won comfortably 2-0 at Holstein Kiel. The Wolves sit in 13th place in the table.

Current runs

Stuttgart have scored in each of their last 20 league matches since a 1-0 loss at VfL Bochum in January 2024. That’s the longest current run in the Bundesliga and VfB’s longest goalscoring run in the German top flight since 1986, when they found the net in 21 consecutive games.

VfL have lost their opening two Bundesliga home games of a season for the first time ever (against Bayern and Frankfurt). It’s now three successive home defeats going back to last term – four would equal the club record set in late 2016.

What the coaches say

Sebastian Hoeneß, VfB head coach:It’s going to be hard work to defeat Wolfsburg. VfL have had a very tough start to the season and done really well against the top teams. We shouldn’t let ourselves be deceived by the results alone.”

Ralph Hasenhüttl, VfL head coach: “We’re not a team who will park the bus. It’s going to be an exciting game. VfB Stuttgart have got the best out of their resources. The team’s development has been remarkable. When you’re consistently up there, it’s no accident.”

Team news

Dan-Axel Zagadou, Leonidas Stergiou and Justin Diehl are absent for VfB due to injury.

Suspension

Wolfsburg’s Yannick Gerhardt is suspended following his red card at Leverkusen.
